No. 45293
No. 45293 is the second Black Five type locomotive to be based at the Colne Valley Railway. It was built by Armstrong Whitworth in 1936 and was first allocated to the former L&NWR shed at Shrewsbury. In September 1938 it was moved to Carnforth and subsequent transfers saw it based at Patricroft, Mold Junction, Chester, Longsight and Shrewsbury again for short periods. In April 1942 No. 45293 was transferred to Carlisle Upperby where it stayed until June 1963 when it moved across the town to Kingmoor shed. While based in Carlisle it would have worked freight and passenger traffic to a variety of destinations which included the Waverley route to Edinburgh and the Settle and Carlisle route to Leeds.
No. 45293 was withdrawn from BR service in August 1965 and with sister locomotive No. 45163 was sold for scrap to Woodhams Ltd. of Barry. It was purchased by the British Enginemans Steam Preservation Society in December 1986 and moved to the North Woolwich Station Museum. It is was moved to the Colne Valley Railway in 1996.
