Freight Vehicles

Railways were primarily built for the carriage of goods, and so we have built a small collection of goods vehicles for demonstration purposes. Some of vehicles have a more practical use and are used for maintenance the railway by taking materials to work sites.

The demonstration goods train: this consists of four vehicles to represent how goods were carried. B507255 is a flat wagon designed for the carriage of containers; not the modern steel maritime containers but the older wooden box type. B459707 is a medium open wagon for the carriage of general merchandise. B765936 is a ventilated van for the carriage of perishable goods. Bringing up the rear is a Brake Van, 17436 which was built for the Great Western Railway, in which the Guard would ride and assist with the braking of the train on gradients.

Maintenance & Utility wagons: Ballast Wagon (HW421) is a hopper wagon which allows ballast to be dropped either side or in the centre of the track. Sturgeon (DB994126) is a long flat wagon which side winches designed to carry 60 feet lengths of rail (on the Colne Valley Railway it is used for carrying virtually anything including carrying Signalboxes!). M202440 is a Signal Post wagon used by the Signalling department for moving materials. 58116 is a modern oil tank wagon used for the storage of diesel for the locomotives.

Under restoration: We have a range of wagons in storage or under restoration for eventual inclusion in either of the two categories above. These include an LNER Brake Van, two BR Brake Vans, an LNER open wagon, two early oil tank wagons and several box vans.
